Another hypothetical branding project for a VIU professor, the Deadpool Domez project was a ground up package redesign. I was tasked with, alongside refining the design, creating a whole new box layout that used less materials. I was told to consider the environmental impact of the materials I chose to use, and decided to completely eliminate the plastic waste from the box. Originally the box was a tall rectangular shape that used a plastic housing to keep the collectible secured and featured a plastic window on the outside for a view into the box. In my redesign I chose to give the box a triangular shape eliminating almost 50% of the cardboard and actually built a small cardboard platform that sits flush inside on the package to secure the product.
Similar to the Builders Bars redesign, I created multiple different 1:1 mockups of this design, finishing the project with about 15 of them. Each week after a brief critique I made minor changes to the design such as the scale, layout and color. After making some adjustments to the front face of the box I found everything scale wise seemed to fall into place. One of the biggest challenges I faced during this project was the lack of access I had to the original artworks. I searched and searched, but was unfortunately unable to find any graphics of high enough resolution to use. My solution to this, albeit a little bit more work, was to illustrate all of the package designs myself. Each picture of Deadpool used on the box was designed in Procreate and exported as a high quality file to the design. All in all, this was actually one of my favorite projects of last year, I had a blast illustrating the designs, figuring out the box layout along with everything in between and wouldn’t hesitate to jump on a project like this again.
