The Importance of Bio Mechanics

For this project I was told to create a multi-layer image for an Op-Ed article adhering to a specific topic in the scientific field, for me this topic was the importance of bio engineering. The amount prosthesis has advanced over the past few decades is truly astonishing, but can they get even better? Well that was my question, or at least the question I wanted the viewer to ask them self when looking at my image. I wanted to target young developers, entrepreneurs and scientists with this piece as it’s my firm belief that these groups have the power to push most scientific research to the next level. Although we look at things like cybernetic limbs as nothing but a sci-fi fever dream, many of these younger groups can actually see the possibility for it’s implementation. Even scientists can be dreamers. With this in mind I wanted my piece to stand out a lot, I wanted it to jump off the page and really say “hey, I’m an actual possibility within the next 20 years”. Once I found my soldier base image, I began the meticulous task of designing the assets for the arm piece by piece in Adobe Photoshop. I started by creating a single bar running from the figures shoulder to wrist and then began placing my assets along the arm, warping them to fit where necessary. Once I had finished the base of the arm, and all of internal wiring, I layered the outer metal plates over top before toning the colour down to better fit the image.
