Icarus Streetwear was a passion project I decided to undertake while I was still in high school, I’ve always loved the Greek myth regarding Daedalus, an eccentric and prodigal designer trapped in a labyrinth of his own creation. His own work, being the main reason he’s stuck there. Eventually Daedalus fashions a set of wings from wax and bronze, for himself and his son Icarus. He tells his son “If you fly too low, the sea spray will destroy your wings, and if you fly too high the sun will melt the wax” unfortunately Icarus
doesn’t listen. Thrilled with his newfound freedom he flies high in the sky until the wax in his wings melts and he plummets to his doom. Although a mildly morbid story, I’ve always felt there was much to be taken away from it. Daedalus was an amazing inventor, but inevitably trapped himself due to his craftsmanship, and even though Icarus was warned of the consequences he still flew too close to the sun. The whole story is representative of balance, one can’t fly too low, or too high without consequences for either and the same can be said for many different things in life. Icarus streetwear to me, was
about balance. I designed and produced all of the clothing in house, with my focus on making the cheapest but highest quality streetwear I could. I used different blank stock shirts such as Gildan and George for the base of my designs and all of my graphics were designed using Adobe Illustrator. The graphics were then later converted to contour cutting paths using Sign Master V.3. Everything was weeded, pressed and packaged by hand, with any designs sporting tie dye also being done by me. I learned a lot about clothing production designing this brand, and truly enjoyed every step of the way.
